James DeZazzo, Ph.D., J.D.

Vice President, Intellectual Property

Dr. DeZazzo brings extensive experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and intellectual property law to his role as Vice President, Intellectual Property at Leading BioSciences.  Prior to joining Leading Biosciences, Dr. DeZazzo served as corporate IP counsel at Dart NeuroScience, a pharmaceutical company focused on therapeutics to treat cognitive disorders. As sole IP counsel, he reported directly to the company’s chief executive officer and played a leading role in creating and implementing global patent strategy, building a trademark portfolio, overseeing contract procedures and transactions, establishing IP committees, providing advice to management and research staff, and developing and enforcing IP policies.  Prior to his tenure with Dart NeuroScience, Dr. DeZazzo practiced intellectual property law in New York City at Darby & Darby, one of the oldest intellectual property boutique firms in the United States, as well as at the East Coast offices of two international law firms.  His responsibilities with these firms included patent prosecution, counseling, and litigation.

A member of the New York State Bar, Dr. DeZazzo is also a registered patent attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  He received a bachelor of arts, Magna Cum Laude, in biology from Colby College, and a doctorate in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan. Following postdoctoral training in Neuroscience at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Dr. DeZazzo worked in industry as a senior staff scientist at GeneWorks, a biotechnology company in Ann Arbor, Michigan focused on animal transgenics and biologic drug production. While working in industry, Dr. DeZazzo completed his legal education at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, receiving his law degree in 2004.
